Int’l Community Held Hostage to Israel, Iran Tells UN Chief

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – In a phone call with the UN secretary general, the foreign minister of Iran bemoaned the fact that the genocidal Zionist regime has held the international community hostage, warning that Israel’s measures have jeopardized global peace and security.

In the telephone conversation on Tuesday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed condolences following the attacks launched by the Zionist regime against the consular section of the embassy of Iran in Damascus that resulted in the martyrdom of seven Iranian military advisors.

“Today, the United Nations also issued a statement in this regard, condemning any attack on diplomatic personnel and facilities,” Guterres said.

He emphasized three concerns of the United Nations, namely, the immediate need for a ceasefire in Gaza, the provision of humanitarian aid to the enclave, and the prevention of further escalation of conflict, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, for his part, appreciated the condemnation and expression of sympathy from the UN chief regarding the Zionist regime’s attack on the consular section of Iran’s embassy in Damascus.

He said, “The recent crimes committed by the Zionist regime resulting in the martyrdom of seven official military advisors of the Islamic Republic and six innocent Syrian citizens, as well as the injury of some other Syrians, constitute a clear violation of international conventions concerning the immunity of diplomatic personnel and facilities.”

“We expect the United Nations to strongly condemn this terrorist act by the Israeli regime,” the foreign minister said.

Amirabdollahian also requested the secretary general’s assistance in convening an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on this matter.

“Unfortunately, the genocidal regime of Israel is holding the international community hostage today, and the actions of this occupying regime are jeopardizing the peace and security of the region and the world,” he stated.

Amirabdollahian finally appreciated the efforts of the UN secretary general to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza, particularly his presence at the Rafah border crossing.
