Syria FM Slams Hypocritical Western Governments

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad criticized Western governments for refusing to condemn the Israeli regime’s recent terrorist attack on the Iranian Consulate in Damascus.

Mekdad and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian met and held talks in Damascus on Monday.

Amirabdollahian thanked Mekdad as well as the Syrian prime minister and other ministers and officials of the country for their presence at Iran’s Embassy in Damascus in the wake of last week’s criminal air attack on the consulate section of the Islamic Republic’s embassy and for their sympathy with the Iranian people and government.

Amirabdollahian added that the terrorist act by the Zionist regime once again proved that this regime does not adhere to any international standards and any human values, and of course the Israeli regime will be punished and will be given the necessary and firm response.

The top Iranian diplomat said Syria’s security is the region’s security and such desperate attempts and crimes will not help to prop up Netanyahu and his regime.

He paid tribute to the souls of all the Syrian and Iranian martyrs of the terrorist crime by the Israeli regime and stressed that such incidents only make Iran and Syria more determined and united to establish stability and security in the region and to stop the Zionist regime.

The Iranian foreign minister also outlined the efforts and diplomatic, legal as well as international measures put in place by the Islamic Republic of Iran in response to the Zionist regime’s crime in Damascus. He noted that Iran has told the US government through diplomatic channels that it is responsible for such crimes as a staunch supporter of the Zionist regime.

“Also, we made all the countries of the world aware of the Zionist regime’s crossing of all red lines and violations of laws, treaties and international laws,” Amirabdollahian added.

He underscored that the aggressor and criminal Israeli regime will certainly be punished for the act of terrorism, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

Mekdad, for his part, welcomed Amirabdollahian and his entourage to Syria. He offered deep and sincere condolences on behalf of the Syrian government and people to leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Imam Khamenei and the Iranian president, government and people as well as the loved ones of those martyred in the Zionist regime’s attack on the Iranian consular section.

Mekdad pointed out that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Syrian Arab Republic do not recognize the Zionist regime, and “we knew from the beginning that this criminal regime does not adhere to any international standards and principles and the UN Charter.”

The Syrian foreign minister said after the instalment of the Zionist regime in the region, Syrians started their campaign against the regime, and following the victory of the Islamic Revolution, Iran refused to recognize the existence of this regime, and the recent attack on the Iranian embassy is the biggest proof of the legitimacy of Iran and Syria’s positions on the Zionist entity.

Mekdad noted that this terrorist crime by Israel, which has all the hallmarks of a war crime and violation of all principles of international law, once again mixed the blood of Syrians and Iranians.

While appreciating the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Iran to push for the international condemnation of the attack, Mekdad said the military aggression by the Zionist regime against the Iranian Embassy and Syrian infrastructure facilities is not separate from the events and crimes of Israel in Gaza, and at the same time, the Israeli regime is massacring Palestinian people.

The Syrian foreign minister criticized Western countries for their stances on this terrorist act. Mekdad stressed that after all such developments, the hypocritical Western governments that speak about the existence of the rule of law in the international arena, do not respect any of the principles of international law and international humanitarian laws.

He noted however that the Israeli regime’s crime will not go unanswered.
