Iran Joins Club of World’s Locomotive Diesel Engine Manufacturers

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran joined the club of locomotive diesel engine manufacturers in the world.

The domestically produced 4,000 horsepower (hp) locomotive diesel engine was unveiled at MAPNA Holding Group in Fardis County, Alborz province in the presence of Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Abbas Aliabadi and CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways Miad Salehi.

The diesel engine, with the tradename “MP610”, has been designed and manufactured by expert Iranian engineers at MAPNA Industrial Group.

By unveiling the 4,000 hp diesel engine, Iran joined the club of the world’s locomotive diesel engine manufacturers.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways Miad Salehi expressed hope that these locomotive types will be produced in large numbers in order to remove the shortcomings in this sector.

He put the number of companies in the country producing locomotives at 10.

The deputy roads minister said that Iran has high potential and capacity in the field of manufacturing locomotives, and expressed hope that the experience of manufacturing locomotives will expand in other fields.

Salehi put the number of freight locomotives in the country at 350, noting Iran needs 300 more freight and passenger locomotives.
