Iranian Official Highlights UN’s Role in Resolving Yemen Crisis

In a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the Third International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria in Kuwait, Amir Abdollahian said the UN can have a significant role in preventing a "all-out war" in the region.

“Continued military operation against Yemen has dangerous consequences for regional countries,” the Iranian official stated, urging UN secretary general to deploy all its capacities and facilities to stop any military action against Sana’a immediately.

He further expressed surprise at unilateral decisions made against Yemen, calling on the UN to play a more active role in halting the crisis.

He went on to say that the consequences of the war on Yemen would definitely lead to an increasing wave of terrorism and extremism in the region and the world.

“Military solution in Yemen is doomed to failure, and national dialog without foreign interference is the only political solution (to Yemeni crisis),” he added.

Ban, for his part, hailed Iran’s constructive and significant role in the region, and called for Tehran’s increased contribution to realize a political solution in regional developments.

Since March 26, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have begun to militarily interfere in Yemen's internal affairs by launching deadly air strikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.
