Iranian Speaker Congratulates New Turkish Counterpart

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani offered his congratulations to Ismet Yilmaz over his election as the new speaker of the Turkish parliament.

In a message to Yilmaz on Saturday, Larijani highlighted the crucial role of mutual cooperation between the Iranian and Turkish parliaments in promoting bilateral relations between the two countries and called for regular consultations between the two legislative bodies.

He further expressed the hope that relations between the two parliaments would be enhanced in Yilmaz's tenure.

Turkey's parliament on Wednesday elected Yilmaz, who served as the ruling AK Party's defense minister, as its speaker.

In the fourth round of voting, Yilmaz garnered 258 votes in the 550-seat assembly, reflecting the number of seats held by the AK Party, which is the biggest party after a June 7 election, but lacks a majority to form a government on its own.
