More Countries to Join Iran, Iraq, Syria in Anti-Terror Campaign: Analyst

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – More countries in the region would join the possible coalition of Iran, Iraq, and Syria against the spread of terrorism, a senior Lebanese analyst predicted as the three countries plan to hold a trilateral meeting in the near future.

The Iran, Iraq, and Syria coalition will discuss the fight against terrorism in their future meeting, Anis Naccache, a Lebanese Middle East strategic analyst, said in a Saturday interview with the Tasnim News Agency, adding that more countries will join the coalition.

He made the remarks in reference to an upcoming trilateral meeting in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad with high-ranking officials from Iran, Syria and Iraq in attendance.

The coalition of the three Middle Eastern countries, which is to be formed in the meeting, will be mainly focused on the campaign against terrorism, Naccache noted.

He went on to say that it would not be merely a security coalition, but also a political coalition engaging other regional countries as well.

A couple of weeks ago, Iran’s Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli announced that “the meeting will be held in Baghdad and the three countries, which are alongside one another in the Resistance Front against Israel and are fighting terrorism, violence and extremism will participate in it.”

Since June 10, 2014, Iraq has witnessed a fresh wave of violence after militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group took control of large swathes of the war-stricken country.

Syria has also been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from the ISIL currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.

The terrorist group claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.
