President Rouhani Calls for Expansion of Iran-Uzbekistan Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday congratulated the Uzbek people and government on the occasion of the Central Asian country’s Independence Day, and hoped for improved ties between Tehran and Tashkent.

In a congratulatory message to his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov on the occasion of the country’s National Day, President Rouhani touched upon the good record of bilateral relations between Iran and Uzbekistan.

He also wished that Tehran-Tashkent ties would be reinforced through joint efforts by the two countries’ officials.

“I hope … we would witness the deepening and development of bilateral relations in line with the interests of both nations at the bilateral, regional, and international levels in all areas of mutual interest,” the Iranian president said.

The Republic of Uzbekistan, a landlocked country in Central Asia, obtained independence from the former Soviet Union on August 1, 1991.
