Extremism, Terrorism, Common Threats to Entire Region: Iran’s FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said all countries in the Middle East are facing the danger of terrorism, and urged the Muslim world to unite against this common threat.

Cooperation among Muslim countries should focus on preventing sectarianism, extremism, and violence, Zarif said, emphasizing that “extremism and terrorism are common threats to the entire region.”

He made the remarks in a Monday meeting with Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid in the North African country’s capital city.

The Iranian minister further called for the expansion of bilateral and multilateral relations between Tehran and Tunis, saying that his country is determined to implement the agreements made in Iran-Tunisia cooperation commission.

He also urged the establishment of direct flight and shipping routes between the two countries, stressing that it can pave the ground for enhancing tourism cooperation.

Essid, for his side, welcomed Zarif’s tour of North African countries, and expressed Tunisia’s preparedness for the promotion of mutual cooperation.

Tourism, industry, and agriculture are among the fields in which the two countries can cooperate, Essid said, urging the exchange of experiences in these fields.

The top Iranian diplomat arrived in Tunisia on Monday as the first destination of a new round of his international tours after the conclusion of nuclear talks between Tehran and major world powers.

Following the Vienna nuclear talks on July 14, Zarif had visited several countries including Kuwait, Qatar, Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria in the Middle East as well as India, Pakistan, and Russia.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) finalized the text of a lasting nuclear accord on Tehran’s nuclear program after 23 months of diplomatic negotiations.
