Iranian Spokesman Says Good News on Anti-Terror Fight Expected

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian administration’s spokesman announced on Tuesday that “promising” news on the fight against terrorism in the region will be unveiled soon.

Speaking in his weekly press conference in Tehran, Mohammad Baqer Nobakht reiterated that Iran’s help for Syria in the battle against terrorist groups is confined to advisory assistance.

“You will hear promising news in the future on the fight against terrorism in the region,” Nobakht, also a vice president, stated, adding that Iran’s advice has had an influential role in this regard.

He made the comments when asked about Iran’s plans for contributing to Russia’s anti-terror military strikes inside Syria.

Last week, Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi had rejected the notion that Russia’s decision to take military attacks against terrorists in Syria may have weakened Iran’s role in the Arab country.

Iran endorses Russia's presence in Syria, Boroujerdi noted, adding that Tehran and Moscow enjoy very good relations.

Since late September, Russia has been carrying out bombings against the ISIL terrorist group in Syria, after Russia's parliament granted President Putin authorization to deploy the country's air force abroad.

Syria has been entangled in civil war since March 2011. The ISIL Takfiri group now controls parts of the Arab country, mostly in the east.

In the past four and half years, more than 240,000 people have died in Syria -overwhelmingly civilians- and around 4 million Syrian people are now refugees in other countries. Around 8 million others have been displaced internally.
