Clashes in Alexandria, Sharqiya, Cairo Remains Relatively Calm
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - There has been relative calm in Cairo since the trial of former President Mohamed Mursi was postponed until 8 January, while other Egyptian cities witnessed clashes and arrests, local media reports said.
Police and army troops were deployed in huge numbers to secure the court, where a reported crowd of around 300 supporters rallied outside, later scuffling and attacking journalists.
In Alexandria, 18 Muslim Brotherhood supporters were arrested on Monday, after they clashed with residents and police forces outside Alexandria Criminal Court, according to security sources.
Security forces stationed near the US Consulate in Alexandria have dispersed protests staged by Mursi supporters who denounced the trial, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.
Alexandria security and army forces had deployed troops to secure the building in anticipation of potential violence.
In Sharqiya, pro-Brotherhood protestors gathered in front of the The Court of First Instance in the Zeraa neighborhood of Zagazig, leading to traffic disruptions and clashes. Gunfire was also heard.
Security forces stationed in front of the court fired tear gas at protestors to disperse them.
