Syrian Forces Retake More Rebel-held Areas
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Syrian army regained full control of Jabal Maheen al-Kabir area in the eastern countryside of Homs on Thursday, a day after government troops captured a suburb of Damascus .
The Syrian army continues to gain more ground in its fight against foreign-backed militants in several areas across the country.
The army destroyed large caches of weapons and ammunitions used by the militants in the Homs region on Thursday. On the same day, the army managed to restore security in the northeastern city of Qamishli.
The Syrian soldiers also inflicted heavy losses on the foreign-sponsored militants operating near the city of Aleppo and in the coastal city of Latakia, killing a large number of them, Press TV reported.
On Wednesday, Syrian state television said that following days of clashes with militants "The army has taken town of Hejeira," south of the capital Damascus.
The town became the latest rebel-held suburb to fall into government hands. State news agency SANA said the army seized control of the town, but was still battling rebels on the outskirts.
On Tuesday, in the flashpoint city of Homs, Syrian troops seized several vehicles equipped with heavy machinegun and killed their drivers.
Also on Monday, the Syrian troops carried out a military operation against Takfiri militants in the key neighborhood of Barzeh, located north of Damascus, inflicting heavy losses on them.
Six other Islamist rebel groups issued a call to arms in Aleppo on Monday.
It came after the army secured the area around the city's airport and retook a strategically important base nearby.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
The UN says more than 100,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the unrest in 2011. More than 2.2 million Syrians have fled to neighboring countries while an estimated 4.25 million have been displaced internally.
It recently warned against the humanitarian situation in Syria, saying that over nine million people are in need of urgent aid due to the crisis in the Middle Eastern country.
