Nicaragua Renews Support for Iran's Rights to Access Peaceful Nuclear Technology

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos Lopez said his country has always supported Iran’s right to access nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

“Historically, we have always supported Iran’s stance on the right to determine its fate, including its stance on the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes,” Lopez said during a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif here in Tehran on Monday.

Also in their speech at the UN, the Nicaraguan envoys have always supported Iran’s nuclear energy program because the country has done nothing wrong in nuclear program, Lopez added.

The Iranian foreign minister, for his part, said that the Islamic Republic enjoys very good relations with Nicaragua and other Latin American countries, adding that Tehran is determined to promote its ties with Latin American countries more than ever.

The Islamic Revolution in Iran and the Nicaraguan Revolution took place in the same year and paved the ground for a major change in international relations, Zarif said.

Iran has sought to increase ties with Latin American countries over the past few years. The promotion of all-out cooperation with Latin American countries is now among the top priorities of the Islamic Republic's foreign policy.

According to statistics released by the International Monetary Fund, Iran's trade with Latin America has witnessed a considerable rise since 2008.

In January 2012, the former Iranian president visited Nicaragua to attend the inauguration of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega for his third term.
