Tehran: Iranian FM Not Received Invitation to Visit Saudi Arabia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has not received any letter from Saudi Arabia inviting the Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to visit Riyadh, said Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle East Affairs.

“We have not yet received a written invitation for a visit by our foreign minister to Saudi Arabia, but a meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers is on our agenda,” Hossein Amir Abdollahian told Al-Alam News Channel on Wednesday.

He called Iran and Saudi Arabia “two important countries in the Middle East region,” and said, “We welcome negotiations and meetings to help resolve regional conflicts and clear up misunderstandings to expand bilateral relations.”

The comments came a day after Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Saud Al Faisal, said that Riyadh has invited the Iranian foreign minister to visit the kingdom.

“We sent an invitation to the foreign minister to visit Saudi Arabia, but this intention to visit has not become a fact... But any time he sees fit to come, we are ready to receive him,” Prince Saud told reporters at a news conference in the Saudi capital Riyadh, Reuters reported.

“We’ll negotiate with them, we’ll talk with them,” Prince Saud said.

The Saudi foreign minister did not say when Riyadh issued the invitation or if Iran had formally responded.
