Iran Finishes Asian Games in Fifth Place

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran came fifth in the medal standings of the 2014 Asian Games with 57 medals, including 21 gold, 18 silver and 18 bronze.

The 17th edition of the Asian Games was held in Incheon, South Korea with the participation of 9,500 athletes from 45 countries.

Asian Games is the world's second-biggest multi-sport event after the summer Olympics, with 439 gold medals in 36 sports up for grabs.

Iran participated in the games with 276 athletes in 22 sports.

China topped the medal table for the ninth successive times in the Asian Games.

With a total of 342 medals including 151 gold, 108 silver and 83 bronze, China dominated the medal tally in the 2014 Asian Games.

Host South Korea came second with a distant margin from table-toppers China. Their medal tally touched 234 including 79 gold, 71 silver and 77 bronze.

Japan came third with 200 including 47 gold, 76 silver and 77 bronze medals.

Aside from the top three countries in the medal table, Kazakhstan and Iran showed their potentials in various sports, placing themselves in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Kazakhstan, which has showed its excellence notably in wrestling and weightlifting, placed fifth and fourth at 2010 Guangzhou and 2006 Doha events, respectively.

Iran finished fourth at the Guangzhou event and sixth in Doha.
