Buying Equipment for Arak Reactor Not Against Geneva Deal: AEOI
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Buying equipment for Arak heavy water reactor is not against Iran’s commitments in the Geneva deal, spokesman for Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) said on Tuesday.
Behrouz Kamalvandi at the same time underscored that the installation of new equipment, not buying new parts, violates the Geneva deal.
Speaking on the sidelines of World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) Conference held in Tehran, AEOI Spokesman, however, said he is not aware of such a purchase.
The Iranian official made the remarks in reaction to a Foreign Policy report claiming that the US administration believes Iran has violated the interim nuclear deal by purchasing new equipment.
Washington has already denied the allegations, saying that Tehran has kept all of its commitments under the deal.
“Iran has kept all of their commitments under the Joint Plan of Action,” the spokeswoman for US Department of State Jen Psaki told reporters, referring to the interim deal made between Iran and world powers in the Swiss city of Geneva back in November 2013.
As regards Iran's cooperation with the IAEA over the new subjects raised by the UN agency, Kamalvandi said that it depends on the finalization of previous issues.
“Iran and the IAEA can discuss new subjects provided that previous issues are resolved,” Iranian official mentioned, adding that the IAEA has not yet provided the original documents and evidence requested by Iran.
Kamalvandi also asserted that the IAEA made some requests like opening an office in Tehran, which Iran has rejected.
The type of IAEA inspections has not changed, he said, Iran has no problem with inspections which are carried out in the framework of safeguards agreement but will not accept the demands which are beyond the deal.
