Iranian VP Congratulates New Somali PM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri congratulated Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke on his appointment as the new prime minister of Somalia.

In his message to Sharmarke on Monday, Jahangiri expressed the hope that bilateral relations between Tehran and Mogadishu would further expand during the tenure of the new premier in diverse areas, including politics, economy and culture.

Jahangiri also wished good health and success to Sharmarke and dignity for the Somali people.

Somalia's lawmakers on December 24 approved the appointment of Sharmarke, who vowed to end the infighting slowing Somalia's efforts to rebuild after decades of war.

Sharmarke, who had served as prime minister between 2009 and 2010, becomes Somalia's third premier in just over a year. The previous two fell out with the president over the make-up of their cabinets.
