Russian Official Urges Putin to Deepen Economic Ties with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The head of the Russian-Iranian business council, Rajab S. Safarov, called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to take immediate measures to promote bilateral relations between Tehran and Moscow.

In his letter to Putin, Safarov has proposed 16 quick measures that should be taken to strengthen Tehran-Moscow relations in the area of economy.

“Currently, trade and economic relations between Russia and Iran have been paralyzed in practice and life in this area has almost stopped,” Safarov said in the letter.

As one of the 16 quick measures, the official has asked Putin to appoint a special envoy for the Islamic Republic of Iran to coordinate policies with the country.

He also emphasized that the memorandums of understanding (MOUs) signed each year between the Iranian and Russian parties in the joint trade commission should “form the basis of all governmental approvals” to be binding for all ministries and institutions.

Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei had earlier said that Tehran and Moscow were planning to create a joint Iran-Russia bank in a bid to facilitate bilateral trade using national currencies of the two countries.

The plans came after the two countries decided last year to strengthen their trade ties in 2015 by simplifying the exchange of their national currencies.
