Ayatollah Khamenei Opposes Bad, Two-Phase Iran Nuclear Deal

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei affirmed on Sunday that any nuclear deal between Iran and world powers should be implementable, stressing that "no deal will be better than a bad one," including a two-phased agreement.

“I agree with an agreement that could be implemented, but disagree with a bad deal,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in a gathering of Iranian Air Force staff in Tehran on Sunday.

Pointing to the notion of “no deal is better than a bad deal”, raised by Washington, the Leader said, “We have the same idea, and believe that the failure to reach an agreement will be better than a deal that is detrimental to the national interests and prepares the ground for humiliation of the great Iranian nation.”

Imam Khamenei underscored that Iranians will never give in to “bullying, excessive demands and illogical behavior” in the course of nuclear talks with the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

“I agree on the continuation and progress of the talks and reaching a good deal,” the Leader reiterated.

Ayatollah Khamenei further expressed opposition to the idea of a two-phased nuclear deal, which entails consensus on the generalities at first and requires agreement on details at a later time.

“Such a deal is not acceptable, because our experience of the opposite side’s behavior shows that mere agreement on the generalities will become a tool for making successive excuses over details.”

“If there is to be any deal, it must have a single stage and include generalities and details together,” the Leader explained.

Ayatollah Khamenei insisted that the contents of a final nuclear deal should be “clear, transparent and not open to interpretation” and prevent the other side from inventing excuses for various issues.

The Leader further called on the Iranian team of negotiators to try to make the enemy void of its leverage, namely the sanctions.

“It will be very good if such thing happens and the enemy becomes disarmed of sanctions, but if it does not happen, everybody should know that there are lots of ways inside the country to stifle the weapon of sanctions,” the Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei also predicted a huge turnout in the upcoming nationwide rallies to mark the anniversary of victory of the Islamic Revolution, noting that the mass rallies will indicate that the Iranian nation is not fettered.
