Deputy FM: Ball in Egypt's Court to Decide on Relations with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Tehran has always welcomed “stable” relations with Cairo and now it is the Arab country’s turn to take a decision on the issue.

Speaking in an interview with Al Alam Arabic language news network on Sunday evening, Amir Abdollahian emphasized that relations between Iran and Egypt have neither progressed nor regressed.

“However, we have always welcomed the establishment of stable and constructive relations with Egypt,” he added.

The Iranian diplomat went on to say that it is the Egyptians that should decide on the expansion of their relations with Iran.

Amir Abdollahian further said that some negotiations between the two Muslim countries are underway at political levels, and underlined that Egypt’s policies on terrorism and extremism is important to Iran.

Back in December 2014, Iran attended an international conference on fight against terrorism and extremism in the Egyptian capital of Cairo.

The conference came a few weeks after hundreds of Muslim scholars from various sects, including Shiites and Sunnis, and from 83 countries, including Egypt, gathered in Iran’s holy city of Qom to take part in an international conference on dangers of Takfirism (extremism).
