Spokeswoman Slams Saudi FM’s Anti-Iran Remarks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham strongly criticized recent “irrational” remarks made by Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister against Iran, saying that Riyadh is angry with the conclusion of Tehran’s nuclear issue.

“When the senior representative of a regional government is infuriated to such extent by the political settlement of regional and international issues, it leaves no doubt that he has chosen a life of problems and crises,” Afkham said on Tuesday.

She made the remarks in reaction to recent comments made by Adel al-Jubeir in a joint press conference with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on Monday.

The Saudi foreign minister had claimed that “Iran continues with its destabilizing interference in the Middle East and is obviously seeking to develop a nuclear bomb.”

In reply, Afkham said Jubeir’s remarks originate from his “irrational anger” at the deal between Iran and the international community to end an “unnecessary crisis”.

"It is regrettable that the comments by the foreign minister of a Muslim neighboring country about Vienna nuclear deal is the echo of those of the Zionist regime (of Israel)."

She also referred to Jubeir’s claims about Iran’s uranium enrichment activities, and stressed, “Such remarks indicate a wrong understanding about international relations and the competence of countries.”

Jubeir had claimed that “the Kingdom is closely monitoring Iran’s quest for uranium enrichment.”

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany) on July 14 reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.

Later, the 15-member United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution endorsing the text of the deal. According to the Resolution 2231, for the first time in its history, the international body formally recognized uranium enrichment program in a developing country.
