Iran’s President Urges Expansion of Iran-Europe Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani described the promotion of Tehran’s relations with the West and European countries, Sweden in particular, as a major step towards enhancing regional security.

“The deepening of our relations with Western countries and the European Union can be a big step towards the reinforcement of regional security,” Rouhani said in a Friday meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven in the Iranian president’s place of residence in New York.

Rouhani, who is the US to attend the 70th Session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), further referred to the issue of terrorism as a phenomenon whose repercussions - such as the recent flock of refugees to Europe - are not limited to a particular place.

This is what makes the reinforcement of relations and cooperation between Iran and Europe more important than ever, Rouhani added, urging global collaborations to fight terrorism throughout the world.

He also touched upon Tehran-Stockholm relations, saying that there is no obstacle to the development of all-out ties between the two sides.

Lofven, for his part, referred to terrorism as a problem threatening the entire world, noting, “Fighting against terrorism requires joint efforts, and Sweden is interested in cooperating with Iran in this area.”

He also voiced Sweden’s willingness to expand its industrial and trade ties with Iran as an important and influential country in the region.

The Swedish minister of industry is scheduled to pay an official visit to Tehran in the near future, and this can be a good starting point for increased economic cooperation between the two sides, he added.
