Iranian, Russian, Syrian DMs May Meet Again Soon: Syrian Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian Ambassador to Moscow Riad Haddad said Iranian, Russian and Syrian defense ministers are expected to hold another meeting on fighting terrorism soon.

“Allied states hold such meetings between defense ministers from time to time. Half a year ago, for instance, such a meeting was held in Moscow. Another one has been recently held in Tehran. The third one may take place in some other place,” Haddad told reporters recently as cited by Sputnik

He added, “The main purpose for such meetings is to determine at which stage we currently are and what else should be done for (Syrian) reconciliation. We consider holding such meetings as necessary.”

Defense ministers of Iran, Russia and Syria held a trilateral meeting in Tehran on June 10 and discussed regional developments and agreed to step up cooperation in their fight against Takfiri terror groups wreaking havoc across the Syrian soil and elsewhere in the region.

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan had officially invited his Russian and Syrian counterparts, Sergey Kuzhugetovich Shoygu and Fahd Jasim al-Furayj, to visit Tehran for the trilateral meeting.

Iran and Russia, known as the main allies of Syria, have been looking for a solution to a crisis that has plagued the Arab country for more than five years.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists, including the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group, currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.

The Syrian conflict has killed at least 260,000 people, according to the UN, and more than half of Syria’s pre-war population of 22.4 million has been internally displaced or fled abroad.
