FIBA Asia Champions Cup: Petrochimi Earns Third Victory

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Petrochimi earned its third successive victory at the FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2016 on Tuesday.

The Iranian basketball team defeated Qatar’s Al Rayyan 89-46 in Chenzhou, China.

Imports James White and Gerald Robinson once again led the way for dominant Petrochimi, which also drew good games from Mehrad Atashi and Sajjad Mashayekhi, who scored a combined 21 points. The frontline duo of Oshin Sahakian and Mohammad Hassanzadeh also stamped their class, grabbing a total of 21 rebounds.

Hassan Mohamed top-scored for Al Rayyan with 16 points.

Petrochimi, the Pool A leader, will play Al-Riyadi from Lebanon on Wednesday.

The 25th FIBA Asia Champions Cup, Asia’s premier basketball competition for clubs, started on October 8 in the city of Chenzhou-Hunan, China and will finish on October 16.

The Preliminary Round of the tournament is played in a round robin format, with every team taking on its four opponents in its respective group.

The top four teams from each group will then advance to the Quarter-Final.

The winners of the Quarter-Final will advance to the Semi-Final, while the losing teams in the Quarter-Final will play 5-8 classification games.

The 24th edition was held in 2013 in Amman, Jordan where Iranian club Foolad Mahan Isfahan emerged victorious beating Al Rayyan from Qatar in the final.
