Iran 3rd at Karate World Championships

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran finished in third place at the 2016 Karate World Championships in Linz, Austria.

Iran claimed three gold and three bronze medals in the event.

Japan secured its place at the top of the medal table after claiming both the men’s and women’s team kata titles on the final day of action.

Japan took six gold medals, two silvers and one bronze.

France came second, winning three gold medals, two silver medals and four bronze medals.

The Iranian line-up - composed of men’s over 84 kilograms Sajad Ganjzadeh, Saeid Ahmadi, Bahman Asgari , Ali Fadakar, Mahdi Khodabakhshi, Zabiollah Poorshab and Iman Sanchooli - prevented Japan from winning top honours in all finals.

Iran defeated Japan 3-2 in the Male Team Kumite.

Iran’s Sajad Ganjzadeh in the Men's over 84kg individual kumite and Amir Mehdizadeh in the Men's under 60kg individual kumite claimed gold medals in the competition.

Also, Iran’s Zabiollah Poorshab in the Men's under 84kg individual kumite, Aliasghar Asiabari in the Men's under 75kg individual kumite and Hamideh Abbasli in the Women's over 68kg individual kumite have won three bronze medals.
