Iran Reports Breach of JCPOA to UN after ISA Extension

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – In a letter to UN chief, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gholam Ali Khoshroo deplored violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) by the United States after the US Congress passed a bill extending sanctions against Iran for ten more years.

Iran maintains that the recent congressional bill on extension of the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) until the end of 2026 runs counter to US commitments to the JCPOA, the nuclear agreement between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), Khoshroo said in the letter to Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday.

The JCPOA stipulates that the United States, as a party to the deal, must refrain from extending or re-imposing sanctions on Iran or taking any measure in violation of the JCPOA’s text and spirit, the envoy underlined.

Khoshroo also held the US government accountable for the negative consequences of extending ISA in defiance of the JCPOA, calling on the UN chief to mention the recent move by the US Congress and other cases of lack of US commitment to the JCPOA in his next report to the UN Security Council.

Last week, the US Senate voted 99-0 to extend the ISA for another decade. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives nearly unanimously in November, and congressional aides said they expected Obama would sign it.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned that implementation of ISA will constitute a “clear and flagrant violation of the JCPOA” and draw a “very harsh reaction” from Tehran.
