Iran’s JCPOA Supervisory Council Discusses Response to US Sanctions Renewal

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Members of Iran’s supervisory council on the implementation of the JCPOA, the July 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, exchanged views about the country’s response to a recent US legislation to renew sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Chaired by President Hassan Rouhani, the Wednesday meeting of the supervisory council on the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) focused on a recent move by the US Congress to vote for the extension of Iran Sanctions Act (ISA).

During the session, the Foreign Ministry provided a report on the anti-Iran legislation and diplomatic measures taken by Iran to protest at the renewal of the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA).

The members of the supervisory council also took necessary decisions to counter the US move to renew the legislation for another ten years.

President Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are among the members of the high-profile council.

The legislation on ISA passed the US Senate by 99-0 on December 1. It passed the House of Representatives nearly unanimously in November, and congressional aides said they expected President Barack Obama would sign it.

Meanwhile, a senior Iranian lawmaker on Friday said Iran’s parliament is weighing a series of measures in response to the US Congress.

While the JCPOA, the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) came into force in January, some Iranian officials complain about the US failure to fully implement the accord.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said last month that if the sanctions were extended, Iran would definitely respond to it.
