Iran Strongly Condemns Deadly Terrorist Blasts in Turkey
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi censured recent terrorist attacks in Turkey’s Istanbul that led to the deaths of dozens of people and stressed the need for global determination to combat terrorism.
In a statement released on Sunday, Qassemi offered his condolences to the Turkish people and government as well as the bereaved families of victims of the deadly attacks and said continuation of such terror acts in “the friend and neighboring country of Turkey” remains a source of deep concern and sorrow for Iran.
Terrorism and intimidation have posed a pervasive threat against all countries and fighting against them has no way other than global determination and consensus, he stressed.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is always ready to cooperate with all countries and take measures necessary for all-out fight against terrorism and extremism,” the spokesman said.
At least 29 people, including 27 police officers, were killed in two separate bomb attacks in the Besiktas district of Istanbul, the country’s interior minister said early Sunday.
Two police chiefs were among the deceased and at least 166 people were injured, Suleyman Soylu told reporters in Istanbul.
Ten suspects have been detained as part of an ongoing probe, he added.
Health Minister Recep Akdag said 20 of the injured have been discharged from hospital while 17 are in surgery, and six are in intensive care units, three of them in critical condition.
A day of national mourning has been declared on Sunday.
