Modern Naval Warfare to Be Practiced in Iranian Navy Maneuver

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Navy commander unveiled plans for employment of modern warfare tactics in an upcoming war game that his forces are going to hold in a vast maritime zone south of the country stretching to north of the Indian Ocean.

The large-scale naval war game, codenamed Velayat-95, will be staged in the Iranian month of Bahman, which starts on January 20, 2017, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari told Tasnim on Saturday.

The exercise will cover a vast area of national and international waters in the northern parts of the Indian Ocean, he added.

The Navy will practice new and up-to-date tactics in the Maneuver, including modern warfare tactics, for the first time, the commander said.

According to Sayyari, new weapons and military equipment will be unveiled in the war game, which also includes testing a broad range of missiles.

In June 2016, Rear Admiral Sayyari said the Navy has plans for 20 military drills in the current Iranian year, which ends on March 20.

According to the commander, the drills include electronic warfare, missile tests, intelligence operations, deployment of submarines, and relief and rescue operations.

Iran has repeatedly declared that its military drills pose no threat to other countries and that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.
