Iran’s Velayati Reiterates Tehran’s Support for Iraq’s Sovereignty

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian political figure underlined Tehran’s steadfast opposition to any plot to disintegrate Iraq, saying that Tehran supports the neighboring country’s territorial integrity.

Ali Akbar Velayati, the head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council, told a group of visiting Iraqi Izadi minority figures, lawmakers and elites that Iran will do its best to support the Iraqi nation, Izadi minority in particular.

“We have an emphasis on (preserving) Iraq’s integrity and preventing its disintegration and we support the country’s territorial integrity,” Velayati, who is also an adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, added.

He further praised Izadi forces’ cooperation with the Iraqi volunteer forces in the fight against Daesh (also known as ISIL or ISIS) Takfiri militants, and voiced optimism about imminent freedom of the city of Mosul.

Iraq has been facing the growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

Daesh militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of Daesh offensive.

Amid tensions in Iraq, Iran is known as the first country to help the Arab country and has always voiced support for Iraq’s solidarity and prosperity.
