Iranian Speaker Hails Armenia for Preventing Crisis

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani lauded Armenia for its “appropriate behavior” in a conflict with the Republic of Azerbaijan, warning that new crises will only harm the region.

In a Wednesday meeting with Armenia’s Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan in Tehran, Larijani hailed the Yerevan government for acting properly in a conflict with Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, saying there would be no bright future for the region with new crises.

Efforts should be focused on preventing recurrence of past conflicts, because no country would benefit from clashes, the speaker stressed.

Sargsyan, for his part, highlighted the “vital need” for closer ties between Armenia and Iran, saying he has discussed enhanced cooperation with Iranian officials during his stay in Tehran.

He also called for the expansion of parliamentary interaction between the two neighbors, saying Armenia’s parliament, which is going to see election in two weeks, will try to form a friendship group with Iran as part of efforts to boost relations.

The Armenian defense minister arrived in Tehran on Monday night and met with a number of ranking Iranian officials, including his counterpart Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan and Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani.
