IRGC Pushing for Development of Border Province

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Force said the force has mobilized all available resources for development of the province of Sistan and Balouchestan, located in southeast of Iran.

Addressing a ceremony to inaugurate hundreds of development projects in the border province on Monday, Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour said the IRGC Ground Force has focused efforts to combat unemployment and poverty in Sistan and Balouchestan.

The commander stressed that tackling poverty will greatly contribute to security in the area.

The IRGC Ground Force inaugurated 823 construction and job-creating projects in Sistan and Balouchestan on Monday, a few days before the 38th anniversary of victory of the Islamic Revolution.

The projects include construction of free settlements for impoverished families, supplying water to outlying regions, and creation of jobs in various fields such as agriculture and road construction.

In comments on the sidelines of the ceremony, General Ziyaoddin Hozni, secretary of a special IRGC base tasked with tackling poverty, said the IRGC is going to inaugurate 2,000 more projects by the current Iranian year’s end, which falls on March 20.

In December 2016, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei issued an order to withdraw a sum of $500 million from the National Development Fund of Iran for development projects in Sistan and Balouchestan.

Located in southeast of Iran, the large province borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, and has a long coastline by the Sea of Oman.

The desert province grapples with severe water shortage, particle pollution, underdeveloped infrastructure and transit of illicit drugs.
