Iran Welcomes Expansion of Tehran-Jakarta Relations: President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the Islamic Republic welcomes closer cooperation with Indonesia in various political, economic, cultural, and scientific areas.

Speaking at a meeting with Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution in Tehran on Monday, President Rouhani stressed the need for the rapid implementation of previous agreements between the two countries in a bid to boost mutual cooperation.

Iranian companies are ready to export technical engineering services to Indonesia, cooperate in completing and developing Indonesian refineries, and participate in power generation and road construction projects of the Southeast Asian country, Rouhani added.

He emphasized that given the extensive facilities and capabilities of the two countries, the level of bilateral trade relations should be further promoted.

The Indonesian minister, for his part, said his country is ready to boost cooperation with Iran in various energy spheres, including investment in Iran’s oilfields and the projects to construct and develop oil refineries in Indonesia.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo paid an official visit to Iran in mid-December and held talks on ways to promote bilateral relations between the two countries in various fields.

During the visit, top officials from the two sides signed four cooperation agreements, including a mutual legal assistance treaty, an extradition treaty, and two memorandums of understanding (MoUs), one on cooperation in the electricity industry and renewable energies, and the other on efforts to encourage investment.

The visit came against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached a nuclear deal in July 2015 and started implementing it in January 2016.
