Iran, Uzbekistan Discuss Closer Ties in Diverse Areas

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – High-ranking diplomats from Iran and Uzbekistan exchanged views about a range of issues, including ways to boost bilateral relations and cooperation in various spheres.

In a meeting with First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Vakhabov Javlon Abdujalolovich in Tashkent on Monday, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour expressed Tehran’s readiness to promote ties with Tashkent in all fields, including politics, trade, transport, tourism and investment.

Iran is keen to connect Uzbekistan to international waters and facilitate rail, road and air transport and will consider any proposal by the Central Asian country in this regard, he said.

The Uzbek deputy foreign minister, for his part, said the country’ new president has underlined the importance of closer ties between the two countries.

The remarks come against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran's nuclear program and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.

The comprehensive nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.
