Tehran-Moscow Trade Turnover to Reach $10bln: Iranian Envoy
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei said the volume of trade transactions between Tehran and Moscow is expected to reach $10 billion within three years.
"The growth of Iran's trade relations with Russia was the biggest last year in comparison with any other country… It seems to me that this trend will continue, and we will reach a considerable trade of $10 billion in the coming two or three years," Sanaei said on Tuesday, Sputnik News reported.
He added, "The economic relations between our countries (Iran and Russia) are developing, and the signing of the basic agreements has created the ground for that. An 80-percent increase in the turnover last year proves this".
The Iranian ambassador further said that creation of a free trade area between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) would bolster Tehran-Moscow economic relations.
The EAEU is a regional political and economic bloc that aims to optimize the flow of goods and services between its members. Its current member states are Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
Since coming into force in January 2016 of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), Tehran and Moscow have ramped up efforts to boost bilateral trade.
Iran and Russia have also formed a strong alliance in recent years, with both supporting the Syrian government against foreign-backed militancy.
