US Lack of Commitment to JCPOA Raised in Joint Commission Meeting: Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said the country’s complaints about Washington’s failure to meet its obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), were raised in a recent JCPOA joint commission meeting in Vienna.

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on Monday, Qassemi said many issues were discussed by the JCPOA joint commission, a group tasked with monitoring commitments to the nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers, when it recently held a biannual meeting.

In the meeting, he said, Iran raised complaints about the US moves to renege on the JCPOA and some remarks made by US President Donald Trump that have disrupted anti-Iran sanctions removal mechanisms.

The spokesman went on to say that Iran’s move to voice dissatisfaction about Washington’s lack of commitment to the JCPOA in Vienna talks has been fairly effective in financial and banking sectors.

According to the statement issued by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the 5th meeting of the Joint Commission since JCPOA Implementation Day was held in the Austrian capital on Tuesday, April 25.

“The Joint Commission was chaired, on behalf of EU High Representative Mogherini, by EEAS Secretary General Helga Schmid and was attended by the E3+3 (China, France, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, United States) and Iran at the level of Political Directors/Deputy Foreign Ministers” the statement read.

“The meeting provided the opportunity to address the implementation of the JCPOA with regard to nuclear and sanctions related commitments. The Joint Commission particularly welcomed the important progress made on the Arak modernization project, where Chinese and Iranian companies signed the first consultancy services contract on Sunday, 23 April, in Vienna,” the EEAS said.

“Participants discussed the importance of implementation of Annex III of the JCPOA on civil nuclear cooperation and welcomed in this context the recent EU-Iran high-level seminar on international nuclear cooperation.”

“All participants noted their continued adherence to JCPOA commitments and stressed the need to ensure its full and effective implementation,” the statement concluded.
