Top Diplomat Urges All Iranians to Go to Polls on Friday

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif underlined the significance of the forthcoming elections in the country, calling on all Iranians living abroad and at home to participate in the landmark event.

“I would call on all Iranians living both outside and inside of the country to go to the polls on Friday,” Zarif said in a statement released on Wednesday.

“Friday’s elections will determine our future and make it clear that the Iranian people will choose the path of progress, development, and solidarity…,” the top diplomat added.

He further emphasized that the vote of every citizen is important and will have an impact on the country’s future, making assurances that the Islamic Republic will safeguard the votes.

Four Iranian candidates, including incumbent President Hassan Rouhani, Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, Mostafa Hashemitaba and Mostafa Aqa-Mirsalim have been campaigning for the upcoming presidential election.

The Iranian presidential vote is scheduled to be held this Friday.

On the same day, people across Iran will also cast their ballots in the 5th City and Village Councils elections.

During the previous presidential election in June 2013, Hassan Rouhani garnered 50.7 percent of a total of over 36 million votes.

According to Ali Asghar Ahmadi, the head of the Interior Ministry’s State Elections Committee, a total of 56,410,234 Iranians can cast their ballots in the election this year.
