Iranian, Russian Diplomats Discuss Closer Tehran-Moscow Cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Mehdi Sanaei and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov exchanged views on a range of issues, including ways to boost bilateral relations between the two countries in all spheres.

Meeting in the Russian capital on Thursday, Sanaei and Morgulov explored avenues for boosting the ties between the two countries.

They also discussed the implementation process of agreements reached during an official visit to Russia by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Rouhani met with Russian President Vladimir Putin back in March. During the meeting, a joint statement on a comprehensive strategic partnership between Iran and Russia that included agreements between the two countries was issued.

Iran and Russia have formed a strong alliance in recent years and have ramped up efforts to boost defense cooperation, trade ties, and cultural interaction.

They have close cooperation on international issues, including the Syrian crisis. They both support the Syrian government against foreign-backed militancy.

Tehran and Moscow insist that the Syrian nation is the only side that has the right to shape the future of the Arab country, which has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
