According to Tasnim dispatches, residents of Damascus danced in the streets, hugged each other and honked their horns as their football team kept its hopes alive of qualifying for its first-ever World Cup.

On Tuesday evening, the Syrian team and Iran’s Team Melli played their Group A match at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

It was in the 12th minute that Syria’s 27-year-old midfielder Tamer Haj Mohamad blemished Team Melli’s clean sheet record at the third round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification tournament, and netted the opener.

Iranian professional footballer Sardar Azmoun, who plays as a forward for Russian side Rubin Kazan, scored two goals to put the Iranian team 2-1 ahead.

Finally, Syrian forward Omar al-Soma scored a last-gasp equalizer to win a vital point for his team and a place in the playoffs.
