Iran’s Foreign Minister Meets UN Officials in New York

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Working to a busy schedule on the sidelines of the 72nd regular session of the United Nations General Assembly, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held meetings with a number of top UN officials as well as religious and political activists in New York on Tuesday.

In one of the meetings, the top Iranian diplomat and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Stephen O’Brien discussed the latest conditions of the persecuted Muslim people of Myanmar, hundreds of thousands of whom have crossed into Bangladesh since late August to escape an ongoing military crackdown.

They also discussed the humanitarian situation in Yemen and ways to deliver humanitarian aid to people of Syria.

Zarif later met with Vladimir Ivanovich Voronkov, the Under-Secretary-General of the newly created United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office.

The Iranian minister also held talks with participants in a conference on Abrahamic religions, the director and members of the International Crisis Group –a New York-based non-governmental organization committed to preventing deadly conflicts- and members of the Strategic Studies Institute.

Zarif has held dozens of other high-profile meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in recent days.
