Iran Not the First Side to Exit JCPOA: President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying Tehran will not be the first side to withdraw from the nuclear agreement.

Iran will not be the initial violator of the JCPOA, the nuclear agreement with the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), President Rouhani said in a meeting with Switzerland’s new ambassador to Tehran on Saturday.

Pointing to Iran’s close cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the president gave an assurance that the country’s nuclear activities have been and will remain peaceful.

Highlighting the positive impacts of the JCPOA on regional and international calm, President Rouhani took a swipe at the US administration for ignoring the result of the nuclear negotiations, noting that posterity will affirm that the policy the current US administration has adopted is “useless and wrong”.

He further voiced Iran’s eagerness to establish strong economic, scientific and cultural relations with Switzerland, calling for the implementation of plans to ease banking interaction between the two countries.

The Swiss envoy, for his part, said he is tasked with carrying out a roadmap to the enhancement of ties with Iran.

He also expressed Switzerland’s support for the JCPOA, and stressed the need for all parties to the deal to honor their commitments.

After months of anticipation, US President Donald Trump on Friday said his administration "cannot and will not" certify Iran's compliance with the JCPOA to Congress, as he set out a new strategy for dealing with Iran.
