Iran Runner-Up at Qatar International Handball Tournament

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran national handball team came second in the Qatar Four-Team International Tournament on Wednesday.

Team Melli defeated Algeria 31-28 in its third match and finished in second place.

Host Qatar beat Oman 38-18 and won the title.

Iran started the tournament with a 32-24 win over Oman and lost to Qatar 33-28.

Algeria came third and Oman sat on the bottom of the table.

Borut Macek’s team is preparing for the 18th Asian Handball Championship which will be held from Jan. 18 to 28 in South Korea and serves as a qualification tournament for the 2019 IHF World Handball Championship.

Iran has been drawn in Group A along with Japan and Uzbekistan. Group B consists of Bahrain, Oman and Australia.

Nine-time winner South Korea, India, Bangladesh and the UAE are in Group C and Qatar, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand and China have been drawn in Group D.

Iran won a bronze medal in 2014.
