TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif started his official trip to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on Friday to hold talks with senior officials of the region on various issues, including bilateral relations.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Zarif left the Azeri capital of Baku for Nakhchivan at the official invitation of the region’s authorities.

Zarif had paid a visit to Baku to attend a ministerial conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on Thursday, and meet with senior officials of the Azerbaijan Republic.

On the sidelines of the NAM meeting, the Iranian top diplomat held separate talks with the foreign ministers of North Korea, Libya, Afghanistan, Palestine, India, Serbia, Venezuela and the heads of the Syrian and Cuban delegations, as well as the president of the United Nations General Assembly.

Earlier in December, Zarif had met with Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Vasif Talibov in Tehran.

During the meeting, Talibov, expressed satisfaction at the growing bilateral interaction between Iran and Azerbaijan, particularly Nakhchivan, in diverse areas, saying, “We are ready to increase our cooperation with Iran in the fields of energy, tourism and transportation.”

In late December 2016, Iran launched a direct passenger train service between its northeastern city of Mashhad and Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan.

The train from Nakhchivan travels to Iran’s northwestern city of Tabriz through Jolfa and thereon to Tehran and finally Mashhad.
