TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Muharram mourning ceremonies to invoke the Shiite Islam's third Imam, Hossein (AS) during a spiritual gathering for peace by Indian Muslims.

According to Hindu Business Line the Indian minister invoked Imam Hussain (AS), to emphasize the need for peace and justice, as he visited a mosque in Indore to attend an event organized by the Bohra Muslims.

Modi shared the prayers with the Bohra community’s spiritual head Seyedna Mufaddal Saifuddin at the ‘Ashara Mubaraka’ event, which commemorates the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain (AS), at the Saifee Mosque in Madhya Pradesh state in central India.

According to a spokesman of the Bohra community, it is the first time that a prime minister has attended the ‘Ashara Mubaraka’ program of the community, which is held annually during the first ten days of the Shiite calendar, coinciding with the Muharram.

Addressing a gathering of Dawoodi Bohra community members, Modi said, “Imam Hussain had sacrificed his life for the sake of peace and justice. He had raised his voice against injustice and arrogance.”

He added that these teachings of Imam Hussain (AS) were more important today than those times.

The prime minister, who was felicitated by Saifuddin on his arrival at the mosque, showered praise on the Bohra Muslim community for globally spreading the message of co-existence.
