The flash floods affected over 2,000 households from wards in Myitgyina, the capital of the state, following a torrential rainfall.

The rainfall also caused landslides destroying bridges and creating havoc in Hsawlaw Township, Xinhua news agency reported.

Local authorities have set up 26 temporary shelters at religious buildings to accommodate the flood victims with aid provided.

Meanwhile, water levels of the Chindwin and Ayeyawaddy rivers are reportedly rising and residents in low-lying areas of northwestern Sagaing region have sought evacuation to safer places.

Earlier this week, Mon state's Bilin and Rakhine state's Mrauk U were also faced with the danger of rising water level.
