Reform of Iran’s Economic Structure to Accelerate: Larijani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani highlighted the importance of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei’s order to reform the country’s economic structure and pledged that the reform’s process will accelerate in future.

Speaking to reporters after a trilateral meeting with President Hassan Rouhani and Judiciary Chief Hojatoleslam Seyed Ebrahim Raeisi in Tehran on Wednesday night, Larijani said the issue of economic reform was discussed during the meeting.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution has issued some instructions on this issue, he said, adding that, God willing, the reform will accelerate and its details will be discussed further in the upcoming meetings of the country’s three branches of power.

“The reform of the country’s economic structure can have good effects on the internal atmosphere of the country,” Larijani went on to say.

The remarks came against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US with Washington imposing new economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since last year after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to reduce Iran’s oil exports to “zero,” and has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, a bomber squad, an amphibious assault ship, and a Patriot missile battery to the Middle East to try to stack up pressure on Tehran.

Iranian officials, however, have dismissed such moves as psychological warfare, saying the country has its own ways of circumventing the American bans and selling crude oil.
