Iran Extends Condolences over Mugabe’s Death

In a statement on Friday, Abbas Mousavi extended his condolences to the Zimbabwean government, nation and family of former president Mugabe who has died at the age of 95.

The Iranian spokesman has praised Mugabe for his leading role as a “national hero” in Zimbabwe’s efforts to achieve independence and liberation from colonialism.

“Even after Zimbabwe’s independence, Mugabe stood strongly against foreign interference in support of the country’s national sovereignty, and held close and friendly relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Mousavi added.

Mugabe has died at the age of 95. He was hospitalized in Singapore for months for an undisclosed ailment.

Mugabe was forced to step down by the military in November 2017 following nationwide mass protests.

The former political prisoner-turned-guerrilla leader swept to power in the 1980 elections after a growing rebellion and economic sanctions forced the white minority colonial government to the negotiating table.
