US Should Change Approach to Ease Tensions: Iran’s Larijani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said there is a political will to resolve the disputes between Tehran and Washington but the US should alter its wrong approach to Iran.

At a press conference in Tehran on Sunday, Larijani responded to a question about any possible solution to the deadlock between Iran and the US, saying there has always been a political will for solving such issues, adding that there is no deadlock.

“There is always the political will to solve the issues and there are some people who are engaged in talks,” he said at the press conference attended by domestic and foreign media correspondents.

However, the US’ maximum pressure policy against Iran is a wrong method that needs to be rectified, Larijani went on to say.

The remarks come against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US with Washington imposing new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since last year after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to reduce Iran’s oil exports to “zero,” and has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, a bomber squad, an amphibious assault ship, and a Patriot missile battery to the Middle East to try to stack up pressure on Tehran.

Iranian officials, however, have dismissed such moves as psychological warfare, saying the country has its own ways of circumventing the American bans.
