Foreign Ministry Says Trying to Address Iranian Students’ Problems in China

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said the ministry is making round-the-clock efforts to address the problems of Iranian students in the Chinese city of Wuhan, which is the epicenter of an ongoing epidemic of coronavirus.

“The Foreign Ministry has been monitoring the situation of dear students in Wuhan since the first day (of the coronavirus outbreak),” Mousavi said on his Twitter account on Friday.

The ministry has been coordinating the provision of supplies for these dear students, pursuing all possible ways to protect their health, including their temporary return to Iran, he added.

“Our colleagues in Tehran and China have been constantly pursuing the issue round the clock,” the spokesman noted.

Wuhan is in virtual lockdown, and nearly all flights at the city's airport have been canceled and checkpoints block the main roads leading out of town. Authorities have imposed similar lockdowns on more than 10 cities near Wuhan as part of the ongoing containment effort.

The virus has so far killed 213 people and spread to at least 18 countries around the world, with the number of confirmed coronavirus cases standing at 9,809.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday declared it an international public health emergency.

Iran is a major destination for Chinese tourists visiting the Middle East.
