Beijing Says It Has Adopted Reciprocal Restrictions on US Embassy Staff in Mainland, Hong Kong

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it has imposed restrictions on the staff of US embassies and consulates in mainland China and Hong Kong, in response to the same actions from Washington.

"To urge the United States cancel its erroneous steps as soon as possible, the Chinese side has recently sent a diplomatic note on introducing response restrictions on the activities of US diplomatic missions in China, including the US Consulate General in Hong Kong, and its staffers," the Foreign Ministry's spokesman, Zhao Lijian, said, Sputnik reported.

At the same time, the ministry hasn't specified the exact measures.

Last week, Washington said it would require senior Chinese diplomats to get State Department approval before visiting university campuses or holding cultural events with more than 50 people outside mission grounds.

Commenting on the measures, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed that the move was a response to the barriers, created by the Chinese authorities for US diplomats for years.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced earlier that senior Chinese diplomats in the US will have to require Department of State approval before visiting universities, meeting with local officials, and hosting cultural events with an audience larger than 50 people outside of mission properties.
