Iran Welcomes Peace Deal in Libya

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson welcomed the ceasefire agreement between the warring sides in Libya.

In a statement on Saturday, Saeed Khatibzadeh appreciated the role of the United Nations and the Libyan negotiating parties in clinching the agreement.

He also expressed hope that the ceasefire would last long and all Libyan parties would live up to their commitments.

Emphasizing the need to cut off foreign interference in the process of negotiations between the negotiating parties in Libya, Khatibzadeh reiterated Iran's opposition to a military solution to the crisis and called for the political settlement of the Libyan crisis through dialogue.

Libya’s rival sides on Friday eventually agreed to sign a permanent ceasefire agreement in all areas, to bring an end to months of deadly fighting in the North African country.

The two sides poised to sign an agreement to open air and land routes that connect all regions and cities in the country.

According to the ceasefire, all military units and armed groups must pull back from the front lines and return to their camps. All foreign fighters and mercenaries must leave Libya within three months – by January 23.
